While you can travel with «regular» shoes, they won’t provide the stability, protection, and long-lasting durability of professional hiking boots. So, whether you’re going on a long trip and looking for the perfect mountain boots, or you’re just tired of coming back from the countryside with warts and a twisted ankle, the following guide will explain how to choose hiking boots in a few simple steps.

What are the criteria for choosing the right hiking boots?

With dozens of brands and hundreds of models of hiking shoes available today, choosing the right one for you can be a bit overwhelming. So before you settle on a brand, here are 3 criteria to help you make your choice:

1. Types of shoes

There are three main categories of hiking shoes that you should familiarize yourself with:

Men's lightweight berets "“Bercak” will suit you if you plan short trips in nature or in the city without weight. This is a flexible and soft shoe with a low height that will provide you with good grip on the field and absorb shocks, while maintaining the comfort and feel closest to sports shoes. Doing the route on Saturdays and holidays? Day hiking shoes will protect your foot from bruises and keep it in place so you can enjoy the trip without fear.

In this category, a particularly easy choice are the Berets from the Ukrainian company “Bertsak”. These extremely stylish walking shoes are equipped with a sole with excellent traction on the terrain, a soft shock absorber and a durable, sweat-wicking upper made of recycled materials. Thanks to this, the Berets, which are available in men's and women's versions, have been extremely popular for over 2 years, and no less than 25 million hikers and backpackers walk with them on every trail around the world in “Bertsak” shoes.”

These are mid-height shoes with good ankle support, are usually waterproof, and are relatively lightweight. Can you hike rough trails or climb granite pillars? Day hiking shoes allow you the widest range of outdoor activities, and are therefore the most popular type of hiking shoe.

Hiking shoes in full, as well as combined leather shoes from the company “Bertsak”. Backpack shoes – boots, these shoes are more suitable for long and strenuous multi-day trips and carrying heavy loads (over 10 kg). These are tough, high and airtight shoes. Although it will take you some time to get used to walking in them, nothing can replace the strength, traction and protection they will provide your feet. Good walkers? Going on the Ukrainian Trail of Travel? These are the shoes you need.

It is important to understand: the difference between shoe types is important and helps to make a more informed decision, but it is not always possible to clearly associate shoes with a specific category, as there are other factors that affect the degree of suitability of shoes (height, weight, soil type, weather, etc.).

If you are one of those who is constantly hot and feels like your feet are being squeezed by bulky shoes, try traveling in berets. Of course, you will not get the same level of support and protection for your foot, but high-quality berets know how to provide basic support and durability even when traveling in places with difficult terrain and climatic conditions, and most importantly, leave your foot as ventilated as possible.

2. Ingredients and technologies:

Sole: The part where the shoe comes into contact with the ground, its role is to provide stability and protection when walking. The degree of stiffness, grip, and depth of the grooves on the sole will affect the grip on the ground and its durability.

Hiking shoes will have deep grooves to prevent rapid wear, while day hiking shoes will have more lugs for traction to increase stability.

Reinforcing strip: Have you ever had your foot get stuck between two rocks while walking? If so, you probably remember that it is not the most pleasant. Therefore, there is a stiffening strip between the sole and the shock absorber, which prevents the shoe from twisting and rolling, strengthens the structure of the sole, improves the operation of the shock absorber and provides protection against impacts. penetration of sharp objects while walking.

In hiking shoes, the stiffener strip will be very stiff to ensure durability, while in hiking and day shoes it will be softer to provide greater flexibility.

Shock absorber: the intermediate layer that separates the sole from the upper of the shoe, as the name suggests; its function is to absorb shock from the ground when walking and to protect the foot, knees and back.

There are two main types of shock absorbers:

A relatively soft material that you'll find in walking shoes and day-trip shoes, it provides a comfortable, springy feel and excellent cushioning, but is less durable over time.

Polyurethane shock absorber, which is harder and less flexible but provides longer life, is commonly found in backpacking shoes.

Today, you can find any type of shoe that has a combination of both materials, so you can choose exactly the ratio that suits you.

Cushion: The part that comes into contact with the foot, its function is to provide softness, ventilation and additional cushioning. Most shoes come with relatively simple insoles, if you have foot problems, you can pull out the insole and replace it with a professional insole. .

Top: the upper part of the shoe is made from a combination of leather, suede (wrong side of the leather), and synthetic materials.

Skin in berets (and reverse leather) provides resistance to abrasion and wear, but increases the shoe's own weight and reduces its ability to evaporate - keep in mind that the leather parts in the shoe make it harder and therefore require a longer break-in period (it is advisable to start walking with the shoe and "break it in" at least two weeks before the planned trip). In addition, to ensure that the shoe lasts for a long time, it is recommended to apply wax to restore moisture and elasticity to the leather parts.

Synthetic materials (various types of polyester and nylon) are lighter, evaporate quickly, and dry quickly, but are less durable over time. Shoes with synthetic uppers require little maintenance and take relatively little time to break in. Shoes will have more leather for added durability, while day shoes for hiking and walking will have more synthetic parts. Most shoes today come in a combination of leather and synthetic materials, so you can find a balance that works for you.

Breathable waterproof – occurs in shoes with a «membrane.» Essentially, it’s a dense mesh that’s sewn into the body and allows sweat vapor and moisture to escape the shoe while preventing water from getting inside.

Today, most shoes are made with a membrane to keep your feet dry from both rain and sweat, and thus prevent calluses and fungus, but if you suffer from heat and sweat on your feet, and you are not going to travel to rainy and humid places – you should look for shoes without a membrane, which will increase ventilation even more.

You know when you finish a tiring day of walking, take off your shoe and have to scrape off the sock that's stuck to your foot? So to prevent this from happening to you, we highly recommend having hiking socks that allow your shoes to "breathe" even more and are able to keep moisture and sweat away from your feet.

3. Comfort and fit of the boots

How do you know if your size is right? When walking, your foot flexes under pressure. Therefore, when measuring shoes, it is very important to check whether there is enough space for your toes (about 1 cm between the toe and the edge of the shoe). Since the shoes are stiff, it is often impossible to check the size in the usual way of pressing on your toes and checking the space.

Therefore, there are three ways to check if the size is right:

1. Pull out the inner liner, stand on it and check that the gap between the toe and the edge of the liner is correct.

2. Try walking down a slope with your shoes on – if your toe lightly touches the edge, the size is probably right. If it is wrinkled at the edge or doesn’t reach it at all, try a smaller or larger size accordingly.

3. When you are standing in the shoe, try to push your foot as far forward as possible towards the edge, and then insert your toe into the gap between the heel and the back of the shoe. If your toe fits perfectly, then the size is probably too big, and if it doesn't fit at all, then the size is too small. Did your toe fit with some pressure? Hooray! - You have found your size.

How do you clean hiking shoes?

How to know if a shoe is right for you? Once you have chosen a shoe according to the criteria, ingredients and technologies that are suitable for your use, all that remains is to check if the shoe is comfortable for you.

In hiking boots, the concept of «comfort» is a bit different: since the shoes are usually much higher and more comfortable than any other shoes, you may immediately think that these shoes are uncomfortable when you first try them on. However, it is important to know how to separate true discomfort and comfort in the fit from simply getting used to the feeling that hiking boots have compared to regular shoes:

If you feel pressure or slight discomfort in your ankle or heel area, that's completely normal! In fact, that's what you want to feel, because that's how you know the shoe is doing its job and keeping your ankle in place - it just takes a little time to get used to the feeling (think about how long it took you to get used to the ankle boots, for example).

On the other hand, if you feel strong pressure on the sides of your foot or extreme discomfort when stepping on it, the shoe design probably doesn't suit you.

They are made from a combination of materials and technologies that provide protection for your body during your journey and durability in all terrain conditions.
